Y-box-binding protein 1 (YB-1) is a versatile DNA- and RNA-binding protein involved in multiple critical cellular functions, including translational repression, RNA stabilization, mRNA splicing, DNA repair, and transcription regulation. It preferentially binds to specific RNA motifs, particularly those modified by C5-methylcytosine (m5C), and plays a key role in mRNA stability by recruiting ELAVL1. YB-1 is also implicated in extracellular exosome RNA sorting, regulation of epidermal progenitor senescence, and pre-mRNA alternative splicing. It localizes predominantly to the cytoplasm but translocates to the nucleus under stress or DNA damage conditions, and can also be secreted, acting as an extracellular mitogen that stimulates cell migration and proliferation.
