The fragment has been computationally selected for optimal stability and solubility, making it ideal for structural studies and biochemical characterization of this important neuronal receptor.

    Glutamate receptor ionotropic, kainate 3 (GluK3) is an excitatory neurotransmitter receptor that functions as a cation-permeable ligand-gated ion channel, activated by L-glutamate and the glutamatergic agonist kainic acid. Upon binding L-glutamate, the receptor undergoes conformational changes that open the cation channel, converting chemical signals to electrical impulses in neuronal communication. The receptor rapidly desensitizes and enters a transient inactive state after activation. In association with GRIK2, GluK3 participates in presynaptic facilitation of glutamate release at hippocampal mossy fiber synapses. The full-length protein is localized to the cell membrane and postsynaptic cell membrane as a multi-pass membrane protein, playing crucial roles in excitatory neurotransmission in the central nervous system.
